Blocking your toilet is a truly horrifying experience and many people reach for a plunger when this happens but they can sometimes make the blockage worse or be very ineffective.
We’ll show you how to unblock a toilet without a plunger and cover everything from how to unblock a toilet full of poo, to what you need to do to unblock a slow draining toilet. So panic not, we have you covered.
Boiling Water
This is probably one of the most effective methods for unblocking a slow draining toilet. You can try this method simply with boiling water alone, or add soda crystals which are easy to find at most supermarkets.
1. Wait until the water level is low. If your toilet is completely blocked, you’ll need to empty it and discard the water down a drain and not in your bathtub or sink as this can spread nasty germs and can cause illnesses.
2. Once the toilet is empty, add around 1-2 litres of boiling water depending on the capacity of your toilet bowl. If you are using soda crystals, add around a cup full to the boiling water before adding it to the toilet.
3. Now it’s just a matter of waiting (it can take hours so be patience) – Your toilet will probably smell of poo, but that’s a good sign of the hot boiling water breaking down fecal matter. Just keep your windows open.
4. When the water has drained to the bottom, it’s a good idea to top up some more boiling water and you’ll see how much faster the water is draining than before. Continue this until your toilet is completely unblocked.
If the water isn’t draining at all by the time the water cools down, you’ll need to empty the water and try again. Yes, it’s a bit filthy but this method is effective.

- Some toilets are not shaped the right way for a plunger to work on.
- It can clog the toilet even more by sucking the poo and tissues up the wrong way.
