Method 1

What You’ll Need

  • Kitchen paper towel
  • Washing up liquid
  • Sponge
  • Surgical spirit
  • Washcloth

Step 1: With the kitchen paper, blot at the oil stain until no more oil can be absorbed into the paper. Avoid wiping at the stain which could damage the fibres of the carpet and pull at them.

Step 2: Apply small amounts of surgical spirit (also known as rubbing alcohol) on a washcloth and blot firmly at the stain. The idea is to ‘soak’ the stain with the surgical spirit. Do not wipe as this will make the stain worse.

Step 3: Add a quarter teaspoon of washing up liquid to a litre of water and mix. Soaking this into a sponge, blot onto the oil stain repeatedly until the stain is removed.

Step 4: Remove excess suds by blotting with water. Dry with a towel by pressing this into the area. Then leave the area to dry out which may take a few hours.

Method 2

What You’ll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Butter knife
  • Baking soda
  • Washing up liquid
  • Sponge
  • Clean cloth

Step 1: Using a butter knife or an object with a blunt edge, remove as much oil as possible from the carpet by scraping it.

Step 2: Cover the stained area sparsely with baking soda and allow this to absorb into the carpet for a good 15 minutes.

Step 3: Once the time is up, vacuum the baking soda covered area. If the area still looks quite oily, repeat the previous step again. Also, large oil spills will require a repeat of the previous step.

Step 4: To check how much excess oil is still on the carpet, use a clean cloth to blot at the area. If oil appears on the cloth, mix a solution of one tablespoon of white vinegar, one tablespoon of washing up liquid and two cups of warm water. Using a sponge, apply this solution onto the oil stain.

Step 5: With cold water, clean the stained area and allow it to dry. This is one of the most effective methods on how to remove oil stains from carpet quickly.

Method 3

Step 3: Pour some cold water into the area and quickly clean at it by blotting with a clean cloth. Keep repeating this until the washing up liquid is completely removed.

Step 4: Grab a towel and press into the area to soak up the water. Repeat with a few towels and use a new dry towel if necessary, until the area is relatively dry. Leave to dry once done.

Method 4
