Electric foot massager machines are designed to boost blood circulation around the legs and feet. They’re designed for people with swollen and aching ankles and feet, a common trait among the elderly and inactive people.

How To Buy an Electric Foot Massager

As the market in electric foot massagers start to slowly expand, we are given more choice but we need to be sure what features and functions are in a foot massager before we go on to purchase one.

The biggest and best brands for this product at the moment are Revitive and HoMedics, who dominate the marketspace. However, you should still know what you’re getting and the following main points will help you.

The type of pad used: Look for gel or rubber electrode pads as these will send low frequency electro-waves that stimulate the nerves in your feet and hits essential acupuncture points which will increase your blood circulation and fully relax you.

With gel pads, it is easier to clean your foot massager so it is more hygienic. Some models will come with extra gel pads that can be used for other parts of your body too such as your neck or back.

Number of programmes and functions available and whether they are simple to follow: It is highly recommendable to look for a foot massager that offers a few different programs with the option to adjust the speed of the massage as this ensures you will get the ultimate foot massage experience.

Beurer- FM60 Shiatsu Foot Massager
The Beurer FM60 provides a shiatsu foot massage.

If you’re looking for more of a traditional massage, then go for a machine that has a shiatsu function which is a traditional form of Japanese massage that refers to ‘finger pressure’. The best shiatsu foot massagers should have at least 3 speed settings, directional rotation option, at least 3 different pressure strengths and the option to customise your programme.

The number of heads and nodes and whether these are rotational: The machine should have at least 3 heads which should be positioned directly under your toes, the sole of your feet and the arch of your feet to ensure the vital pressure points in your feet are activated to help relieve tension and improve circulation.

The nodes are designed to be similar to ‘fingers’ and the more nodes that are in each head, the better and deeper your foot massage will be. In addition to this, having the heads rotate will give you that extra deep knead for your tired and aching feet.

Heating function: With a heated foot massager, not only will it keep your feet warm for the colder months but helps to ease muscle stiffness and tension soothe and is good at boosting blood circulation.

Whether the machine is suitable for the user: Some electric foot massagers are not suitable for diabetics, pregnant women, users with deep vein thrombosis or those who are epileptic. So if any of these apply to you, please check the warning labels on the box.

However, there are foot massagers that are named as ‘Circulation Boosters’ which are suitable for some of the above. It is also important to note that not all machines can be used by children under 16 either.

Here’s a demo video of the award winning Revitive IX Circulation Booster. Rob Freeman explains how this product works and why it’s loved by its many users.

Other Considerations

You may come across some foot massagers that are designed with soft fabric lining which will give your feet some comfort as well. These ones are ideal for the colder months but many are not considered suitable for those with medical conditions.

It’s worth checking if the fabric can be easily removed to be washed as some machines also come with a heating function which can make your feet quite sweaty with the fabric too.

An ergonomically designed foot massager will ensure your joints are targeted to ensure a maximum release of tension helping you on the path to relaxation.

What’s even better is that this type of machine gives you the option to massage your calves too. You will see that these machines will have a ‘high walled deep pocket’ design where your calves can fit comfortably in the pockets.

One last important point, you may want to consider a machine that comes with a handy remote control too so you won’t have to move from your comfortable position to change the speed setting or programme during your foot massage. Ahhhhh!

Will an Electric Foot Massager Benefit You?

Most people tend to be on their feet a lot, we need to use them to get us places. And let’s not forget that it’s our feet that are supporting our entire body weight so we really need to take extra good care of them.

One of the best ways we can give our feet that extra TLC is with an electric foot massager. Here are some examples of how it can benefit you:

  • Releases tension in our feet by kneading out the knots, muscle aches and pains – Very good for those who suffer from tired aching feet on a daily basis.
  • Improves circulation by getting the blood flowing with directional massage movements – ideal for people who suffer with poor circulation.
  • Reduces swelling as it increases oxygenated blood in your legs which will revive the energy in your legs.

An electric foot massager is designed to hit and stimulate vital pressure points in the sole of your feet, your toes and the arch of your feet with little ball like bits that are called nodes.

These imitate the well-practiced hands and techniques of Chiropractors, Massage Therapists and Asian Massage and Reflexology Therapists.

The people that can benefit most from an electric foot massager are:

  • The elderly – The older we get, the more our muscles stiffen causing aches, pains, discomfort and fatigue.
  • People with medical conditions or poor blood circulation such as diabetics or those on chemotherapy.
  • Plantar fasciitis sufferers – Pain and swelling can be reduced.
  • Manual labour workers who tend to be on their feet doing heavy lifting throughout the day.
  • Pregnant women in their second or third trimester.

Not only has the benefits been scientifically proven but it’s also a lovely treat for your feet to be pampered as well. Just 20 to 30 minutes use on a daily basis is enough to give you the relaxation that you need at the end of a long day.

Does nobody make a physical foot vibrating massager.
The ES is ok but an old physical pifco hand held vibrator works best.but is only hand held and not a foot rest on unit.
I,m looking for a two foot rest on foot platform that physically vibrates the feet at different frequencies

    Anybody know of any massager?

    • Hi Andrea, have you tried any of the Revitive Circulation Boosters / foot massagers?
